Anaemia is a global health problem in both developing and developed countries with major consequences on human health. Anaemia is the worlds second leading cause of disability. The World Health Organization estimated the number of anaemic persons to be about 2 billion worldwide and approximately 50% of all cases can be attributed to iron deficiency. Anaemia is responsible for about 1 million deaths a year, out of which three-quarters occur in Africa and South-East Asia. About half of all school children in developing countries including Africa and Asia suffer from anaemia.
