Introduction

Alcohol addiction is one of the most prevalent substance use disorders worldwide. Research in this field addresses biological, psychological, and social determinants while exploring interventions to reduce harmful consumption. This article reviews five domains in alcohol addiction research: neurobiology, genetic factors, behavioral interventions, pharmacological treatments, and public health strategies.

Key Research Areas

Neurobiology of Alcohol Addiction

Chronic alcohol use alters brain pathways related to dopamine and reward mechanisms [1].

Genetic Influences

Genetic predispositions, such as variations in alcohol dehydrogenase genes, contribute to risk [2].

Behavioral Interventions

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been shown effective in relapse prevention [3].

Pharmacological Treatments

Medications such as naltrexone and acamprosate support abstinence and reduce cravings [4].

Public Health Approaches

Taxation, regulation, and awareness campaigns have reduced alcohol-related harm [5].
