Abstract
Hearing loss affects millions globally, with mild-to-moderate cases being the most prevalent yet often untreated due to barriers such as cost, stigma, and limited access to professional care. The advent of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids, following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) 2022 regulatory change, has aimed to address these challenges by offering affordable, accessible solutions for adults with self-perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss. This article evaluates the Nuance Audio Hearing Aid, an innovative OTC option integrated into smart glasses, designed to enhance speech-in-noise comprehension while addressing cosmetic and comfort concerns. Through a review of clinical pilot studies, user feedback, and technological features, we assess its efficacy, user satisfaction, and potential to improve hearing health outcomes. Findings suggest that the Nuance Audio Hearing Aid offers significant benefits in speech clarity and listening effort reduction, though limitations in self-fitting accuracy and applicability to diverse hearing profiles warrant further investigation. This study underscores the promise of OTC hearing aids like Nuance Audio in expanding access to hearing care, while highlighting areas for future research and development.
