Abstract
Anaerobic digestion is a key biological process for treating organic waste, producing biogas and digestate. Advancements focus on enhancing efficiency through reactor design, microbial manipulation, and integration with other technologies. Research addresses pretreatment of recalcitrant substrates and understanding microbial consortia for stability. Valorization of diverse organic wastes, including agricultural residues, food waste, and sewage sludge, is explored via co-digestion and process intensification. Digestate management, nutrient recovery, and environmental impact reduction are critical. Biogas upgrading technologies are reviewed for biomethane production. Digestate application as biofertilizer requires careful property and impact assessment. Integration with biorefinery concepts promotes a circular economy.
