Abstract
Bioaugmentation, the deliberate introduction of microorganisms, is a vital bioremediation strategy for degrading environmental contaminants. This approach has shown significant progress in treating petroleum hydrocarbons, persistent organic pollutants in wastewater, and heavy metal contamination in soils. Advances include genetic engineering of microbes, optimization of environmental conditions, and understanding microbial consortia dynamics. Bioaugmentation is also being explored for plastic biodegradation and improving soil quality in agriculture. Effective implementation requires ecological consideration and molecular monitoring of augmented communities.
