Abstract

Microbial biofilms are increasingly recognized for their diverse biotechnological applications. This collection of research explores their utility in bioremediation, wastewater treatment, resource recovery from waste, biofuel production, carbon capture, water purification, biosurfactant synthesis, and antifouling technologies. Engineered biofilms demonstrate enhanced pollutant degradation, while others provide sustainable alternatives to chemical treatments. Their roles in metal bioleaching, lignocellulosic biomass conversion, and CO2 sequestration are significant. The capacity of biofilms to adsorb and degrade recalcitrant contaminants and produce valuable biomolecules underscores their multifaceted potential. Advances in biofilm reactor design and microbial engineering continue to expand their application scope in environmental and industrial biotechnology.
