Received Date: Nov 27, 2024 / Published Date: Jan 14, 2026
Abstract
Creating an advance directive is an essential step in ensuring that an individual’s healthcare preferences are honoured in the event they become unable to make decisions for themselves. This process involves careful planning, clear communication and legal documentation. The advance directive outlines specific healthcare decisions, including preferences for life-sustaining treatment, organ donation and end-of-life care. This paper presents a step-by-step approach to creating an advance directive, emphasizing the importance of understanding one’s values, discussing wishes with family and healthcare providers and completing the necessary legal forms. Additionally, the paper explores the role of medical professionals in guiding individuals through this process and the potential challenges and ethical considerations involved. By providing a structured approach, this work aims to empower individuals to make informed decisions and alleviate potential burdens on families and healthcare systems.
