Abstract
Environmental genomics, a rapidly advancing field, leverages high-throughput sequencing to explore microbial communities in various ecosystems. It enables the study of microbial genetic potential, metabolic functions, and adaptations without cultivation, particularly through metagenomics and functional metagenomics. This approach is vital for understanding biogeochemical cycles, bioremediation of pollutants such as plastics and heavy metals, and maintaining soil and water quality. Advances like single-cell genomics offer granular genetic insights, driving innovation in discovering novel enzymes for industrial applications and environmental cleanup, leading to more sustainable solutions.
