Abstract
Fungal bioremediation presents a sustainable strategy for managing diverse environmental pollutants, including hydrocarbons, pesticides, and heavy metals. This review highlights the significant role of fungal enzymes and metabolic pathways in pollutant degradation. Specific fungal species like *Pleurotus ostreatus*, *Aspergillus niger*, and *Rhizopus arrhizus* demonstrate efficacy in
breaking down PAHs, biosorbing heavy metals, and removing chromium, respectively. Endophytic fungi enhance phytoremediation, fungal consortia improve pesticide degradation, and fungi like *Penicillium chrysogenum* and *Trichoderma reesei* are effective against textile dyes and crude oil, respectively. The enzymatic machinery, particularly laccases and peroxidases, is central to these processes. Fungal biosorbents are also emerging for treating novel contaminants like pharmaceuticals, underscoring fungi’s crucial role in environmental protection.
