Abstract

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are increasingly recognized for their potential in sustainable energy generation and wastewater treatment. This collection of research showcases advancements in electrode materials, microbial community engineering, and operational strategies aimed at enhancing MFC performance. Studies demonstrate the effectiveness of novel carbon-based electrodes and biochar modification for improved electron transfer and catalytic activity. The impact of substrate concentration and bioaugmentation with specific exoelectrogenic bacteria on power output and pollutant removal is explored. Furthermore, MFC applications are expanding to include the treatment of pharmaceutical and textile wastewaters, as well as the remediation of microplastics. Innovations in reactor design, such as membraneless systems, and a focus on scaling up MFC technology for industrial deployment are also presented.
