Abstract
Nasal decolonization is an important component of infection prevention protocols for reducing Surgical Site Infections (SSIs). Virtually all
reports on the efficacy of nasal decolonization protocols have focused on the pharmacologic agent used during the decolonization process.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of the actual methodology used in a decolonization protocol through sequential nasal cultures
obtained immediately before, during, and immediately after performing the decolonization process in preoperative patients. The statistically
significant data observed in this study demonstrate the critical importance of following healthcare associations’ methodological guidelines
for skin antisepsis when performing nasal decolonization.
