Traumatic Brain Injury: Restoring Communication Through Interventions
Abstract
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) profoundly affects communication, encompassing speech, language, social interaction, and cognitivecommunication functions. This review synthesizes current research on TBI’s impact on oropharyngeal motor control, language processing, and social communication, emphasizing the vital role of speech-language pathologists. It explores innovative rehabilitation strategies, including technology-assisted approaches and neuroplasticity-informed interventions. The article also addresses neuroanatomical correlates of speech deficits, voice disorders, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) in TBI. Understanding the interplay between cognitive function and speech intelligibility is crucial for effective intervention. A continuum of care perspective, highlighting interdisciplinary collaboration and patient education, is essential for optimizing outcomes in TBI rehabilitation.
