Understanding Immune Aging: Causes, Effects, and Interventions

Abstract
Immunosenescence, the age-related decline in immune function, increases susceptibility to infections and age-related diseases.
This phenomenon encompasses changes in innate and adaptive immunity, including chronic inflammation (’inflammaging’), T and
B cell senescence and impaired innate cell activity. Cellular senescence and gut dysbiosis further exacerbate immune dysfunction.
Consequently, vaccine efficacy is reduced in the elderly. Research is exploring interventions like senolytics and lifestyle modifications
to mitigate immunosenescence and extend healthspan.
